Description

On 12 April 1923 a new administrative system was introduced and the territory of the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic was initially divided into 53 districts and 706 raions (although governorates were kept until August 1, 1925). On October 1, 1924 Tahanrih and Shakhty districts were transferred to the Russian Socialist Federal Soviet Republic, while Putyvel county and a few smaller fiefs along the Russian / Ukrainian border were transferred to the UkrSSR on October 16, 1925 and April 1, 1926. The number of both districts and raions kept changing till September 15, 1930 when the entire district tier was abolished. On 1 March 1927 there were 40 reapportioned districts and the Moldavian autonomy further re-divided into 624 raions and the additional raion-size separate territory of the Dnipro river reed-bed in Zaporizhzhia district.
